Configuring Microsoft Outlook Express as a Newsreader



  Double-click the "Outlook Express" icon to start Microsoft Outlook Express.

Click the Tools menu, then click Accounts....



  On the "Internet Accounts" page, click the Add button, then click the News... menu item.


  In the "Display Name" box, enter your name as you want it to appear on your e-mail messages.

Then click the Next button.



  In the "E-mail address" box, enter your e-mail address (which is your Coastal username followed by @coastalnow.net).


  In the "News (NNTP) server" box, enter news.coastalnow.net

Put a check in the box labeled "My news server requires me to log on".

Then click the Next button.



  In the "Account name" box, enter your username using the syntax username.coastalnow.net@coastalnow.net.

(For instance, if your Coastal username is johndoe.coastalnow.net, enter johndoe.coastalnow.net@coastalnow.net in the "Account name" box.)

In the "Password" box, enter your Coastal password.

Then click the Next button.



  You are now ready to begin subscribing, reading, and posting to any of the thousands of newsgroups available to you!

Click the Finish button.



  You will see the new newsgroup account you have created listed in the Accounts window (along with any other accounts you may have set up, such as e-mail.)

Click the Close button.



  If you would like to get a list of available newsgroups now, click the Yes button. Otherwise click No to return to the main Outlook Express window.


  Outlook Express will download a list of available newsgroups, which may take a few minutes.


  Once the list of newsgroups has been retrieved, you choose which ones you want to subscribe to. Scroll through the list and double-click those you want to subscribe to (or click the newsgroup name, then click the Subscribe button.

You can also search for newsgroups by typing in one or more keywords in the "Display newsgroups which contain" box above the list of newsgroups.

Newsgroups you have subscribed to will have a icon next to them.

Once you've subscribed to the groups you want to read and/or post to, click the OK button.



  Back on the main Outlook Express screen, you should see the news.coastalnow.net server listed in the left frame, containing all the newsgroups you have subscribed to.

You can now begin reading and posting new messages just like you do with Outlook Express
e-mail. Double-click a message in the message window to read it, or click the icon next to a message to view the entire thread of discussion on that topic.

To post a new message of your own, use the New Post button. To post a reply to a message on the group, use the
Reply Group button. To send a reply to the message's author directly, without posting your message to the group, use the Reply button.
