Setting Up Your Computer to Use Coastal Broadband Service
|
In order to use Coastal Broadband service, you must have a Network Interface Card
(NIC) installed in your computer. The cable from the Broadband router will plug
into the jack on the NIC. You will also need to install the TCP/IP protocol
if it is not already installed. (If you have been using Internet services
from Coastal or another provider before, TCP/IP is probably already installed.)
1) Determine Whether TCP/IP is Installed
To determine whether TCP/IP is installed, click
Start -> Settings -> Control Panel. Double-click the "Network" control
panel to open it. You will see a screen similar to this:
|
 |
Scroll through the list of network interfaces and protocols and look
for an entry in the form of:
TCP/IP -> your network card.
In the example to the left, the entry
"TCP/IP -> NETGEAR FA310TX Fast Ethernet PCI adapter"
indicates that the TCP/IP protocol is installed and correctly bound
to the network card.
If TCP/IP is already installed, skip to step #3 - "Configuring TCP/IP".
Otherwise, proceed to the next section to install TCP/IP.
|
2) Install TCP/IP
Open the Network control panel (if it's not already open) by clicking
Start -> Settings -> Control Panel. Double-click the "Network"
control panel to open it. Click the Add... button. Next, in
the list of items to select from, click Protocol, then click
Add.... You will see a screen similar to this:
|
 |
In the "Manufacturers" column, click Microsoft.
In the list of "Network Protocols", scroll down and click
TCP/IP.
Click OK.
When you return to the Network control panel window, you should
be able to scroll through the list of network components and
see one or more new entries in the form of
TCP/IP -> interface.
Click OK to close the Network control panel and follow
the Windows prompts to restart your computer and complete the installation.
|
3) Configuring TCP/IP
The next step is to configure TCP/IP with the correct IP address, DNS,
and Gateway settings. Open the Network control panel by clicking
Start -> Settings -> Control Panel, then double-clicking
the "Network" icon.
|

|
Under the "IP Address" tab, click the radio button next to
Specify an IP address:.
Enter 192.168.1.2
in the "IP Address" field, then enter 255.255.255.0 in the
"Subnet Mask" field.
|

|
Next, click the "DNS Configuration" tab.
Click the Enable DNS radio button to activate the fields
below it.
Enter your Coastal username in the "Host" field. Enter coastalnow.net
in the "Domain" field.
Enter 216.166.216.2 in the "DNS Server Search Order" field, then
click Add to add it to the list. Next, enter
64.40.67.37 in the "DNS Server Search Order" field, then
click Add to add it to the list as well. When you're done,
your screen should look similar to the one on the left.
|

|
Next, click the "Gateway" tab.
Make sure there are no gateways listed in the "Installed Gateways"
box. If there are any gateways listed, remove them by clicking
each one, then clicking the Remove button.
Enter 192.168.1.1 in the "New Gateway" field, then click
"Add" to add it to the list of installed gateways. When you're
done, your screen should look like the one to the left.
The TCP/IP settings should now be set. Click Ok to exit the
"TCP/IP Properties" window, then click "OK" to exit the Network control
panel. Follow the Windows prompts to restart your computer and complete
the installation.
|
4) Configuring Microsoft Internet Explorer
You may need to configure Internet Explorer (IE) using the
Internet Connection Wizard the first time you run it. Once
IE has been configured correctly, you should be able to
go straight to the Web when you double-click the Internet
Explorer icon.
|

|
To configure Internet Explorer or check its current
configuration, click Start -> Control Panel.
Double-click the "Internet Options" icon.
|
|
To check your existing Internet settings, click the
LAN Settings button. Uncheck all three checkboxes
("Automatically detect settings", "Use automatic configuration script",
and "Use a proxy server"), then click OK.
|
 |
To configure Internet Explorer using the Internet Connection Wizard
(ICW), click the Setup button in the "Internet Properties"
window.
On the first ICW screen, click the radio button next to I
want to set up my Internet connection manually, or I want to connect
through a local area network (LAN), then click Next.
|
 |
On the next screen, click the radio button next to I connect
through a local area network (LAN), then click Next.
|
 |
On the next screen, remove the check mark from the box labeled
Automatic discovery of proxy server (recommended). Make
sure none of the other boxes are checked, then click Next.
|
 |
On the next screen, click the radio button next to No,
then click Next.
|
 |
The configuration of Internet Explorer is now complete.
Click the Finish button to exit the Internet Connection
Wizard.
